Segments is the first step of a Personal pages campaign: the audiences your pages speak to, and which one each visitor is in — so which version of your pages they see. Personyze proposes the segments from your site; you check them, say what puts a visitor in each, and choose what happens to a visitor nothing recognizes. Start with New campaign → Personalize your pages → Personal pages. Read more, in the step’s blue box, explains it in the panel.
Personyze reads your site
Your site holds the address Personyze reads — your account’s site to start with; the arrow beside it has your others. Read my site opens your pages and finds what each kind of page shares (the hero, a pricing table, an FAQ), the audiences your pages speak to, and which pages speak to whom. It proposes your segments and writes the first versions for you to approve. It takes a few minutes and goes on without you, showing what it has Found so far, then Your site was read. After your site changes, Read it again. If it stops part way, the step says why.
Who it’s for
The band at the head of the segments, Who it’s for, says who the campaign is for at all. With no rules it reads Everyone – each visitor sees their segment’s version — what most campaigns need. Limit it opens targeting rules in a drawer, any rule a campaign’s audience can have (see Targeting Rules in Personyze); the band then reads Only visitors who match: and the rules in words, or Everyone on your site, except: when they only leave visitors out. Change edits them; Remove the limit takes them out.
A campaign set up before may also carry settings from its old Target step — how long a visitor stays matched, how often it shows, an overlap group. They still apply, so the band names them, with Clear them to set them back to a new campaign’s.
The segment cards
Under Segments, a row per segment: its name, what puts a visitor in it, about how many sessions it had last week, and how many of its versions wait for you or are approved. The ones that say Nothing puts a visitor in it yet come first, under Needs you – nothing puts a visitor in this segment yet; the rest follow under Ready – Personyze already recognizes this segment’s visitors. Past six segments, Show all n segments opens the rest.
An account has one Personal pages campaign, and its segments are the account’s.
Open a row for its card; type over its name to rename it. About this audience holds Who they are, the Language its versions are written in and Instructions for the writer — used whenever Personyze writes for this segment; a fact your site does not say is still never written. Then its ways in, and Remove.
Adding a segment
+ New segment opens a drawer: a Name, and What puts a visitor in it? — Pages, ads and sites, Their company or Targeting rules. Create segment opens its card, ready for that way in.
Suggested segments, under the list when there are any, are visitors none of your segments takes, found in last week’s traffic — each with its size, its rule and who they are. Add brings the segment with its rule; Skip, and it is not suggested again; Add all (n) adds every one.
Every way into a segment
An open card has a line per way in. Add another way in adds the others: + Landing address, + Ad words, + Sending site, + Their company, + Targeting rules.
| On the card | Who it puts in the segment |
|---|---|
| They land on one of its pages | A visitor landing on a page the reading matched to the segment. |
| Their landing address contains | A visitor whose landing page’s address contains what you add, like /logistics — at least three characters. A segment nothing puts a visitor in offers the pages that fit it under Suggested landing pages; Add their suggested pages (n segments) adds the first of each at once. |
| The ad’s words contain | A visitor whose ad link carries your words in its utm_term or utm_campaign. |
| They come from the site | A visitor sent by that site, like example.com. |
| Their company | A visitor whose company’s Industry or Company name contains your words, whose Company size or Revenue is in your range, or one of your account’s own profile fields contains your words — as your company-data tool finds it: Albacross, Clearbit, ZoomInfo, Leadfeeder and others (see Integrations). Common industries and ranges are a click each. Their companies last week shows what the rules matched; Industries in no segment last week offers the rest. |
| Targeting rules | A visitor whose first page matches the rules — any rule a campaign’s audience can have, your CRM and profile data or a discovered audience among them (see Audience Discovery). Edit rules, Remove rules. |
| Their answer to the question / Their pick in the mode switch | A visitor who picks this segment, while Ask offers it. |
A visitor is in one segment only, so the same address, ad words or site cannot be in two segments.
How a visitor gets their segment
Below the segments, How a visitor gets their segment shows its settings as chips; open it to change them. As a visit starts, the checks are asked in this order, and the first that recognizes the visitor gives their segment. Move up and Move down reorder the first four:
- The page they landed on
- The words of the ad they came from
- The site that sent them
- Targeting rules
- Their company — always last, never moved.
Their company is last because it is often known only after the first page: it gives a segment to a visit that has none, and never changes one. It is never automatic — only a segment’s company rule puts a company in that segment.
Under the order, Nothing above recognized them? holds Remember and Ask. For a visitor the first four checks did not place, their answer to your question counts first, then the segment remembered from their last visit, and their company after both. Still no segment: they see your pages as they are.
One segment for the whole visit
Once a visit has a segment, it keeps it until the visit ends: every page shows the same segment’s versions. A visit with none can still get one later — from the visitor’s answer or their company — but nothing changes a segment once given. A visitor nothing recognizes sees none of the versions — your site as it is. The one exception is the mode switch: a visitor’s own pick changes their segment whenever they make it.
Remember a visitor’s segment
Off until you switch it on. On, a returning visitor nothing else recognizes starts in the segment of their last visit — for 30 days, or the days you type in its box (1–365). A later visit that the checks do place goes in that segment instead.
Ask the ones you don’t recognize
Off until you switch it on; it needs two segments or more. A visitor with no segment gets a short question — “Which of these describes you best?” — with your segments as its answers, under their names on this step. Their answer is their segment. A visitor with a segment never sees it, and closed, it does not come back. See what visitors would get draws it before you switch it on.
On, it is one line with Settings and Edit its look and words. Settings: When (Right away, On their second page, or after some seconds), The answers (at least two segments) and Its look:
| Look | What a visitor sees |
|---|---|
| Pop-up | A card in the middle of the page, the page dimmed. |
| Side tab | A “Personalize this site” tab on the right edge; the question opens when clicked. |
| Bottom bar | A bar along the bottom with the question and its answers. |
| Corner button | A “Help us personalize” button in the bottom corner; the question opens beside it. |
| Mode switch | “Viewing as:” in your site’s header, for every visitor — below. |
Edit its look and words opens the question, a Form of this campaign, in the editor: its heading, words, look and close are yours.
The mode switch
With Its look set to Mode switch, the setting reads Let every visitor switch your site’s mode. “Viewing as:” and a segment sit in your site’s header, just before its main button, on every page, for every visitor — Always there – every visitor, every page. Before a pick it shows the segment they are in, or “Personalize your view”. A pick loads the page again in that mode.
Their pick comes first, before the order, and changes their segment whenever they pick; the chain shows it above the order as First: their own pick. Until they pick, the order decides. Short names give an answer a short name of up to 16 characters — ABM for Account-Based Marketing — for when the whole answer does not fit beside “Viewing as:”; the menu always shows the whole answer.
Saving and publishing
The ways in, their order, Remember, Ask and Who it’s for are kept when you save the campaign; until then the step says Not saved yet. A segment added, a name, About this audience and a segment’s targeting rules go into the campaign’s draft as you make them. Either way, nothing reaches your visitors until you publish the campaign — Publish to staging or Publish to live (see Campaigns). On a campaign already on staging or live, the header says Not on your site yet while it holds changes your site does not have. Next: What changes.
