Every form and survey that asks for an email address also decides whether that person agreed to your marketing emails. People who agree are recorded as subscribers. People who don’t still get the thank-you and whatever they asked for, but your email campaigns skip them.
The setting: Ask permission to send marketing emails
| Where | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| A Form or a Survey | Questions, look and feel, on the first Email question. |
| A classic Lead Capture Form | The Where the data goes step. A classic form’s box is part of its design, so this step shows whether the design draws one (“On – your design shows a box to tick”). You switch the box on or off in the design. |
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| On | A box the visitor ticks to agree, added right after the Email question with the words “Send me emails about news and offers.”, which you can change. If they tick it, they are subscribed with those words. If they leave it unticked, they are not, and your email campaigns skip them. |
| Off, Subscribe everyone who sends this form (in a survey, …this survey) | No box. Each address is recorded as agreeing to your marketing emails, in the line under the email box (or the form’s own words, or your default wording). |
| Off, Don’t subscribe them | No box, and nobody who sends the form becomes a subscriber. Your email campaigns skip the new addresses. |
A Feedback question subscribes someone only if its design has a consent box and they tick it.
The box starts ticked or unticked
The box starts: Ticked means they are subscribed unless they untick it, and Unticked means they have to tick it themselves. A box starts ticked when you add it. A required box always starts unticked, because a required box that starts ticked is the same as no box. Each subscriber’s record keeps how the box started.
What is recorded
- Agreed: a consent record with the words they agreed to, the time and where it came from, in the consent log under Settings › Email setup › Address & consent. If you turned on double opt-in, they first get the confirmation email — see Double opt-in and the consent log.
- Did not agree: a new address goes on Bounces & spam as Didn’t agree to emails (under Unsubscribed), with the form as where it came from.
- An address you already had, from a visitor profile, your store, an import, the API or an earlier form, is not listed when its owner leaves the box unticked. It keeps the standing it had.
Which emails skip them
| Skips people who didn’t agree | Still goes to them |
|---|---|
|
|
Where you see it
| Where | What it says |
|---|---|
| An email campaign’s User Base step, under By email | “N people skipped: they didn’t agree to emails” |
| Bounces & spam | Didn’t agree to emails, from A form or the form’s name |
| The person’s visitor profile | “Didn’t agree to marketing emails – form, date”, the form named by its campaign |
| A campaign’s recipient report | “They didn’t agree to emails” for each skipped send |
When they agree later
The listing goes away by itself when the person agrees: they tick the box on any of your forms, send a form that subscribes everyone, confirm through a double opt-in link, subscribe again through your unsubscribe page, or your connected store or CRM says they are subscribed. You can also take it off by hand on Bounces & spam. The panel asks first: “This person did not agree to emails when they sent your form – your email campaigns will reach them. Remove it only if they have agreed since.”
